Before Your PRD: The 15- and 12-Month MyNavy Assignment Checklist

Reviewed July 17, 2026. Good order negotiation begins before the application window opens. Current MyNavyHR guidance gives Sailors two useful preparation points.

At the 15-month preparation point

  • Update your phone number and email addresses in MyNavy Assignment.
  • Update assignment preferences and your MNA résumé.
  • Review qualifications, NECs, and career goals.
  • Communicate with your detailer about realistic expectations.

About 12 months before your PRD

MyNavyHR encourages Sailors to begin applying for orders and permits up to seven applications in each MNA cycle. Eligible Sailors may also see billets connected to advancement opportunities.

Prepare for Project Compass recommendations

The Navy's 2026 Project Compass guidance says recommendations use Sailor qualifications, experience, preferences, bookmarks, and Fleet priorities. Before the application phase:

  1. Confirm both primary and secondary email addresses are current in MNA and NSIPS.
  2. Use “My Preferences” to update job and location preferences.
  3. Search and bookmark billets that interest you.
  4. Submit applications before the cycle closes.

A Project Compass recommendation is not a selection guarantee. Available billets can change, and detailers must balance qualifications, career needs, Sailor preferences, and Fleet requirements.
